The town of Cornelius, located in Mecklenburg County, was founded in 1893 but not incorporated until 1905. This one-time textile town has embraced Lake Norman, which has inspired the development of high quality motels, restaurants, shops and residential developments.
Here you will find numerous waterfront communities, historic homes, new construction and established neighborhoods. Of note is The Peninsula, named appropriately as a stretch of land jutting out into Lake Norman with many fingers of its own, equaling 11 miles of shoreline, accommodating nearly 800 homes. The Peninsula is where you will find The Peninsula Club, a private golf club with lavish amenities. Just down the road is The Peninsula Yacht Club, a true boaters’ paradise.
Located at the intersection of two main thoroughfares, the Cornelius downtown area is in a transitional period. In 1997 old warehouse/mill structures were demolished and construction began in 1998 for the new 25,000 square foot Town Hall. The next phase brought the development of two and three story “main street” buildings and townhouse units. Today, the area flourishes with businesses and with a variety of residential lifestyles to choose from. Delightful shops, galleries, eateries, brew houses, greenways and trails give residents and newcomers a quality lifestyle.
With all it has to offer, it is no surprise that Cornelius has experienced an explosion of growth over the past few years. In the year 2000, the population was 11,969 and it is currently estimated at 30,000.
